FOR many users of I.B.M. PC's and compatibles, Better Working Eight-in-One may be the only computer program they will ever need. Even people who have more ambitious requirements in one or two areas may find that Eight-in-One is just fine in the others.

Eight-in-One puts together the eight basic computer functions in one package, with consistent operations across the board. It would be only a slight exaggeration to say that once you know how to use one of the subprograms, you know them all.

The eight functions are a word processor, a spelling checker, a data base, a spreadsheet, an outliner, a graphics program, a communications program and a set of desktop utilities.

The word processor is an able example of the breed, and it uses the special function keys on the keyboard, plus logical combinations of cursor, control and ''alt'' keys, to produce straightforward documents. For example, to boldface a word you press the alt key followed by b; to underline a word you use alt and u. To move the cursor a character to the left, you naturally press the left-arrow key; the control-left arrow combination moves all the way to the left, to the beginning of the line.

The various editing and file commands available on the keyboard are also accessible, along with many others, by calling up one of seven menus of options. Help is never more than a keystroke or two away.

The usual other word-processing features - cutting and pasting blocks of text, searching and replacing words and phrases, counting words, putting titles at the top or bottom of a page and checking the spelling - are all there. Printing is just as simple.

And if you need a feature that is not offered - it's hard to think of one offhand - you can convert what you have written into a form that can be used with another word processing program with more features.

The word processor and spelling checker would be worth the $59.95 alone.

For those who are still interested in running this program on modern PC's, it works very well under DOSBox, a free download!
